Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Well said, Solar. And we might draw parallels with a scene in ASIB but I think it is too late in the evening for me.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

@ nakahara Nobody is denying that.
But that is a completely different thing from what the artists say they intended.

(Shrugs shoulders)
And this artist maybe intended this song as happy:

I still hear bittersweet melancholy....

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Art is never only what the artists intended. The moment your present your work - music, painting, literature, film - to the public it does not belong only to you any longer and is free to be analysed and felt and commented upon by others. And others bring their own perceptions, idea, preference into it and create something new.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

The artist is free in their intent and you are free to perceive how you choose.
@ Susi: if somwthing new is created it is just that...it is not the same as the original work and should not be confused with it.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Art that does not communicate with its audience by giving them new ideas and that does not move their hearts with new feelings is not art, it´s a kitsch.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Who is confusing something new with an original work here, besleybean?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Yes, of course you see what you see, of course you create something out of it (which might be different for everybody) and of course you are entitled to.  It's just interesting to occasionally get the makers' view on what they wanted us to see, and/or how they see it themselves.   I think it's lovely that we don't have to see John as jealous, angry and negative ... we've been told that Mark and Steven see him as genuinely caring about Sherlock's happiness at that point (which to me, seems a more natural reaction for him to have to somebody he loves and cares about).    It's possible to have that warm view of Sherlock and John's relationship (regardless of Johnlock, I think - John could still be attracted to Sherlock, but be pleased that he's happy).

John finds out soon enough that Sherlock was deceiving Janine.  But it's nice that there's that moment of being happy for him.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Of course, there is nothing wrong with that.

And that's a good example for what Susi was talking about in terms of perception, ideas and preference that people bring into a work of art. Your idea is that it's nice to see John being happy for Sherlock and you prefer this over John being jealous. So hearing Mofftiss talk about this in the commentary makes it easy for you to actually see this in the episode. And there's nothing wrong with it. But it still has to do with what you prefer to spot in that scene in contrast to what you don't really want the scene to be about.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Of course, I prefer it .  It shows John in a better light, and shows their relationship in a better light.  I actually mentioned something about our preconceptions and how they influence our viewing a while back, and I agree, it makes it easier for me to take on board what Moftiss say than it might be for somebody who prefers to see John as jealous.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Thank you, mrshouse. This is what I love about the show - sometimes you just have to look at what the actors are going and do not need any additional explanations.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Gah, the post is awfully edited, I'm truly sorry, it doesn't work the way I want...

Well, the important things are there.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Very good observation, mrshouse, that last John´s facial expression looks more like a spasm than a genuine smile.

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

And another not so happy for my best friend face, embraced by Sherlocks hands holding the engagement ring in the box, I ask you!

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Sorry, can't stop myself. This is John's body language when Janine leaves. Very happy, indeed:
