Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

Someone told me a story recently about when the US wanted to put on their own version of Fawlty Towers. I don't know how true it is literally, but it's true regardless (if that makes sense).

Apparently, John Cleese asked them if they were really sure that they could make it work for a US market. They replied that they had looked at the script/stories and worked out that if they just eliminated one character, it would work quite well.

Which character???

Why, Basil Fawlty, of course!

Bloody US television *headdesk*

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

Yeah, I have to agree with you two above, US television is awful -- the shows just don't seem to have the depth that, say, Sherlock has (though, of course, there are a few exceptions). And I should know, haha, cause I live here. ;P
That's mostly why I'm skeptical about them making an another version of Sherlock Holmes. They're going to Americanize it, make it... well, stupid and lacking the character depth that Sherlock BBC has. American TV characters are usually so.... shallow. :/ And please don't say "Well, that fits, since they're Americans." because not everyone over here is like that, haha. I just hope it turns out better than I expect... not too much better, because I don't want it competing with Sherlock, but good enough so I won't have to cry about how badly they butchered it. ;P

Of course, in the end, it doesn't really matter as long as Sherlock keeps going. XD

I agree about poor Jonny's scarf, it looks like one they have picked up at a charity shops- not everything is negative about clothes in charity shops, by the way, but an old man's scarf? Come on!
The bit about Steven Moffat's rant amused me- a true Scot! Straight down the line and say it as it is, no English reservation from him!

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

Found this synopsis of the storyline:

"ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare – a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he’s devised his own post-rehab regimen – resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock’s police contact, Capt. Tobias “Toby† Gregson (Aidan Quinn), knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crimes, it’s simple deduction that he’s going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it’s elementary that it’s a job for Watson. Rob Doherty, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Michael Cuesta, who directed the pilot, are executive producers for CBS Television Studios."

And whilst on another SH related website, saw a really nice comparison from one of the BBC Sherlock fans:

"Gatiss, Moffat, Cumberbatch, and Freeman are the Beatles and no matter how good Elementary turns out to be, it can never be seen as anything better than the Monkees."

Lol, made me laugh.

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

Interesting, when I saw the pictures I thought Liu looked more like a Holmes and Miller more like a Watson. That might have been interesting...

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

I was thinking the exact same thing! (Liu as Holmes and Miller as Watson) Also, Lucy Liu really surprised me in the trailer. I had expected her to be worse but then she was quite good..whereas Miller disappointed me. Still, I am willing to give this show a chance but it is gonna be hard for them to convince me, I guess...

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

CBS is an American... network? I'm not sure that is the correct word... TV channel? Maybe someone can explain better. They make series and all that stuff and are now making another Holmes adaptation to modern days.
The rest you can imagine having a look at this post...

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

I think this show has potential. However, to me, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will always be my Sherlock and John. It certainly isn't that way for everybody, especially Granada die-hards, but I love the way that Moftiss does the show. I also have a major, major crush on the city of London.

I think it will probably end up "just another cop show". As far as an American Sherlock Holmes, House has that cornered. Brilliant show. Especially because Elementary's focus definitely seems to be on the characters and not on the stories. I see no parallels to A Study in Scarlet. What makes Sherlock so brilliant is that it is entirely loaded with canonical references. It is bursting to the seams with inside jokes and funny little pokes at the canon. So I can understand why it isn't as great if someone hasn't read the books. But still. Elementary just doesn't seem to come anywhere close.

(Also, people criticize Moftiss for guarding Sherlock and the copyright so zealously. But it's like their child, okay? A really, really, successful child. I think people should cut them slack.)

Television network, TV channel, network, and just channel all work fine. I use station interchangeably as well but that might just be a regional thing.

Truly, not all American telly (er, television) is crap. Benedict himself actually praised Mad Men. I think we do quite well when we don't rip off other shows. (Also, Don Draper is so awesome because he is shallow!)

Re: CBS Sherlock (aka The Elementary Thread)

True! Not all American TV is crap. Some of it is of very high quality, brilliantly scripted and acted. I am, however, reminded of something I heard on BBC Radio 4 the other week. The programme involved tv scriptwriters for UK programmes: Morse, Spooks, Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes. It was specifically about writing the last ever episode in a long running series - I missed the very start so it may have been linked to the finale of House. The explanation given by the writer of LoM/AtA as to the American producers reaction to the ending was revealing. They said they were disappointed with the ending because the guy was just in a coma, to which the writer replied along the lines of ' Yes he is in a coma.' The producers then said 'but we thought you were going to do something cleverer as an ending.' To which they received the reply, 'But he isin a coma. That's the whole point of the story.'

The scriptwriters' complaint generally is that UK writers look for resolution to their stories and that resolution is not what many US producers are looking for they are looking for an 'Ending'.
