Don't get the mpreg thing. Never will.
Dare I ask where the child emerged from?
I'm not quite sure. After the "water broke" and "get me towles and hot water" parts I barley flew over the rest of the story 'cause it was too weird . But es far as I remember the author skiped that detail.

Oh, the most interesting detail - what a shame
I read an mpreg once only because I was curious. Didn't get too deep into it.
But what I find interesting is that there are actual writers fascinated enough by the idea to make something of it.
What does it tell us?

I'll try almost anything but I have definitely steered well clear of Sherlock/Mycroft (incest, no thank you) and also Sherlock/Molly pairings. I just can't see it. She's lovely, but I can't see Sherlock having a relationship with her under any circumstances. At least not with them both remaining in character as far as the BBC show goes. I also tend to steer clear of Irene Adler focussed stories, although Sherlock/Irene pairings can be okay.
I go through phases and I'll pretty much read anything as long as the characters are in character. Yes, even omegaverse and Mpreg stories - so long as those sections aren't the main focus of the story.
I don't really go for kidlock or teenlock, but having said that there are still some pretty decent stories out there that fall into the teenlock category. I've never read any kidlock.
I think if the author is able to write a believable, in character story, I'll read it. I've been surprised at what stories I've enjoyed actually

Meanwhile I start getting a bit bored of the "explicit" parts. Probably overdosed.

Mpreg doesn't float my boat either. I once read an Adlock story that wasn't badly written and well constructed but in the end it didn't convince me.

OK, maybe a stupid question, but what is Adlock?

Adler/Sherlock?

Mmhh, make sense, but never read that abbreviation before.

Susi! You're back! Missed you.
Agree that almost anything can pull me in if everyone is "In Character."
And some seem to feel "off" more than others. I've only read a couple of stories using rene as a main character where she felt right to me. But your millage may vary.
Can someone explain to me where the whole Alpha /Beta/Omega stuff comes from? I assume it's barrowed from some particular fandom?

I read some pisting somewhere that explains it's origins. I'll look for it when I am back at my computer. It has something to do with wolves - maybe a werewolf trope?

I wasn't entirely sure where this discussion was going..
But it seems to have gone all animal behavioiuralist!
I'm no David Attenborough.
But it's a recognised classiification of animals:
For example, the Alpha(superior) male gorilla in a group.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but here seems like a good idea. For a while now, as I've been reading Johnlock fan fiction, I've been collecting the descriptions of how each of the authors describe John's smell and taste. I've just been doing it for fun and thought I would share a few here as a lark. Interesting how unique they all can be. Sorry, I can't cite the stories these are from as I wasn't keeping track when I started...
"And his smell, like wood smoke and wool and the second pot of tea when he’s reused the leaves and gunpowder and blood pumping through his veins so close that Sherlock can feel the coppery taste of it pulsing in his own mouth…"
"He tastes like alcohol and mint and a soft buttery flavor that matches his own scent."
"John smells much more John this way, with Sherlock's nose so near his ear and the edge of his collarbone. John smells like the colour orange, pumpkin orange, but never like oranges or like pumpkins. Sherlock realizes this would make little sense to anyone save him, but after all, no one save him will ever hear it."
"He's fisting his hands in John's coat, everything teeth and tongues and heat and yes, and John needs to be closer, and Jesus the doctor tastes the way pastry shops smell but without the sugar, just warm and good and alive…"
Sherlock: "You taste brilliant. Oh, you taste like thunderstorms and bread with salted butter and copper coins."
John: "You can taste thunderstorms?"
Sherlock: "Haven't you ever smelled a thunderstorm?"
John: "You mean electricity?"
Sherlock: "Yes, but--"
John: "With bread?"
Sherlock: "Shut up, shut up, like this."
"This time when Sherlock's tongue slides into John's mouth, John starts sinking to the floor, which is really an excellent idea, in Sherlock's opinion. An utterly cracking idea, and so is the fact that Sherlock has lost his coat and the thundercloud-coloured shirt is now being pulled from his shoulders, and the way John's blood tastes with John's saliva involved reminds Sherlock of an eight hundred quid bottle of white Burgundy Mycroft once gave him after he'd refused a knighthood for the second time. There are minerals, and bits of apple, and lingering acid, and some sort of butter, he can't decide whether Irish or French. If Sherlock can think of a scientific way of bottling it, he is going to try it out."
"John smells like every warm thing in the world Sherlock has ever yet encountered, every good thing, but mostly of spiced tea, especially at pulse points. John is indispensable."
"John was kissing him. He didn't seem to have woken up, but he was kissing him just the same, lips moving smoothly and slightly parted so that Sherlock could taste a rather different flavour of toothpaste to his own, together with something he could only identify as 'John flavour'."
"He ran his nose along the side of John's jaw, murmuring his name. He liked the way John smelled, he decided. There were elements of soap, shaving cream etc., but underlying everything was a warm, slightly earthy smell which simply said 'home' to Sherlock."

Great idea and a wonderful collection, KP!
Makes me want to stay at home right now and read all those storys...

Wonderful, KP. And we all know how strong the sense of smell does influence people. May I request a collection about the smell of Sherlock's hair?

Thank you! That explains so much. Still not my thing but at least I'm not so confused!
Another thing I don't want to see is Sherlock as a vampire, werewold or zombie.

I've never read fanfic before, even though my eldest daughter lives for it.
Once I succumbed to the fan fic category, I've done little more than read it.
I avoided the Au stories until one had been talked about several times (actors in a leading role). I've found quite a few aus to be wonderful, and even in character.
I read one kidlock ficlet that was heartbreaking.
(No, I've no idea the name, or where I found it).
I don't mind Mystrad if it's just there while John and Sherlock realize you don't have to be having sex to be in a relationship. (If smut happens after that, well. ...)
My OTP is johnlock, and when quotes are sprinkled through - if well done - I can hear the voices clearly.
