Five min interview from 2008

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/the-5minute-interview-benedict-cumberbatch-actor-779150.html

Cumberbatch, 30, is best known for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama 'Hawking', for which he received a Bafta nomination and won Monte Carlo's Golden Nymph award. Since then, he has appeared in a number of films including 'Atonement', which is out to own on DVD, and 'The Last Enemy', which will be available in March

If I weren't talking to you right now I'd be...
Probably making a long list of things to do around the house and then doing them. I've just moved house so there are plenty of menial tasks, like painting, plumbing and shifting boxes of things.

A phrase I use far too often is...
"Sorry I'm late!" I'm a terrible time-keeper.

I wish people would take more notice of...
Each other. Metaphorically speaking, it's easyto bump into one another on the journey from A to B and not even notice. People should take time to notice, enjoy and help each other.

The most surprising thing that happened to me was...
Landing the role of Stephen Hawking was the most positively surprising thing that has happened to me. In terms of the negative, I was car-jacked in South Africa. It was a terrifying experience: I felt completely out of my depth and helpless.

A common misperception of me is...
If I get something wrong or if I'm late it's an act of wilfulness. This is not the case; it's disorganisation on my part.

I am not a politician but...
I would like to see a dialogue between the Arts Council, the Department of Sport and Media and the practitioners. It would be great to see some sort of continual, transparent dialogue between these three.

I'm good at...
I'm good at being self-critical. I've also been told that I'm good at taking up new sports. I'm a fast learner and pick things up very quickly. I was recently in Mozambique and did scuba diving for the first time. I took to it immediately and obtained my Padi diving certificate. I also took to snowboarding very quickly.

I'm very bad at...
Remembering birthdays and prioritising things.

The ideal night out is...
A group of friends going out for dinner. The place would be quiet enough to chat, but fun also.

In weak moments...
Try to imagine myself on top of Hampstead Heath, breathing in the fresh, cool air in order to calm myself, as opposed to the norm which would be losing my temper.

In another life I'd have been...
Some sort of eco-warrior or tree surgeon.

My philosophy is...
Enjoy the journey of life and not just the endgame. I'm also a great believer in treating others as you would like to be treated.

Mycroft’s popularity doesn’t surprise me at all. He is, after all, incredibly beautiful, clever and well-dressed. And beautiful. Did I mention that?

Re: Five min interview from 2008

Another '5 minutes with' interview from the Times on Saturday:

Benedict Cumberbatch is best known for the BBC seriesSherlock but has also appeared as Edmund Talbot in a dramatisation of William Golding’s To the Ends of the Earth. On stage, he was in Frankenstein and his films include Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He will voice Smaug the dragon in Peter Jackson’s film of The Hobbit.

As well as starring in a dramatisation of Golding you are now appearing in a documentary about him. What is it about Golding that appeals?
Partly it’s because he lived so many lives, as a sailor and a teacher as well as a writer. And he’s a phenomenal writer. He writes with great wit and he’s very frank in his assessment of man’s inhumanity to man.

You taught in a Tibetan monastery in your gap year. Did you enjoy it?
I was teaching monks but I wasn’t a particularly good teacher. It’s very rewarding but it’s incredibly hard work.

Has Sherlock changed your life?
To the outside world it looks like everything has changed overnight but I have been working for ten years. And I’m still having to prove myself.

In Frankenstein you performed naked. Was that alarming?
Alarming’s one word. But you just have to get over it. There’s a hell of a lot to concentrate on.

One of the critics was rather worried about splinters.
I had no problem with splinters. But [in rehearsals] we originally had a birthing pool and while it was a great idea [the water] meant you couldn’t get any purchase on the stage. So I slid out and went flying across the stage and I cut myself open in several places. Not in that place. But I’ve got a few scars from that production which I’m very proud of.

It’s been announced that you are in the new Star Trek movie — playing who?
An undisclosed role.

Is it an enjoyable undisclosed role?
Very enjoyable indeed.

You learnt the violin to be able to play Sherlock. Was that enjoyable or painful?
I would never insult the musical profession by saying that I had learnt the violin. I am desperately trying to convince people that what I am playing looks realistic. I have had some lessons.

Caitlin Moran has described you in The Times as having “clay-white skin"  with a “sexy-sloth face" .
I’ve had some very weird and interesting comparisons to my face — a meerkat, a hammerhead shark … they all blend into one. I don’t take any offence.

It’s been said that you’re similar to Sherlock. Are you?
I’m like every character I’ve ever played. There is an awful lot of me that’s not like Sherlock but that’s the me to share with those I know and love.

I  love this.   I  used the search method to find out if Ben really knows how to play the violin,  and I  found the answer here.  I  hope he keeps up  with it.  violin music is quite soothing, if one plays it correctly.   and yes, me being hearing impaired,  I can still "hear" the music.

Re: Five min interview from 2008

Thanks for posting, it all sounds very sweet. I don't want to think what might have happened during this car jack in SA, must have been a terrible experience. But I can't imagine him losing his temper and being not nice to other people. Maybe he's running around all the time on the Heath controlling his feelings  . Would be worth a try to take a little walk over there.

So maybe he will play Heathcliff one day eh? Clearly he's been working on his time keeping.

Don't make people into heroes John. Heroes don't exist and if they did I wouldn't be one of them.

Hm, I doubt if he's dark and brooding enough - although with that Sherlock hairstyle and five o' clock shadow  … no, no, the beard would be ginger, can you dye a stubble? Heavens, what am I thinking?
