Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

My reading error (from the book description):

"It looks at what makes this actor so well suited to play one of popular culture's iconic characters, Sherlock Holmes, and how SUSI is so well suited to propel Cumberbatch toward greater global fame."

I'm too much on this board, so much for sure

I like your mistake, Harriet. And I'd love to translate it. I just sent a Facebook message to the author.

Was thinking Why does Susi want the author to know about my mistakes?    Got it now. Go ahead!

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

It's always the same - you need a publisher willing to pay for the rights before the translator can go ahead. So let's hope the book is good and not just a rip-off to make money. At least it seems to concentrate on his work and not his private life.

Is it authorised?

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

No, it isn't authorised. Of course it would be nice if he participated in this in any way but I think he's focused on his work. I visited the author's blog and it seems she concentrates on analysing his performances and not on his private life. I'll keep an eye on her Facebook page as well. She said she's going to post some passages from the book in the near future.

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

My copy arrived today.
Nice cover photo - the only one of the book. The contents seems to be promising - I'm looking forward to reading it later in bed.
(Though it's a difficult decision against my Kindle...)

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

I ordered the book with amazon.uk on April 24 and I got it on June 5.

There has to be something wrong with your order, Punch. Just ask them.

Just check your spam fold (if you haven't already) just in case they have sent you an e.maIl about the delay. If no chase them up.

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

Has anyone read the book yet? How is it, by which I mean, is it serious and informative, or is this just someone jumping on the Benedict bandwagon to make some extra money out of his fame?

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

I've read the book. The author presents no scandals or glimpses into his private life but concentrates on his performances as suggested by the title. The thing for me is that she doesn't provide much that is new if you've been a fan for some time because you will know quite a lot of things already. On the other hand I liked the information about his stage performances which are not available on DVD. She describes Benedict's work quite well and there are some interesting insights in his choice of interpretatin (especially in the case of "Rhinoceros").
If you are a new fan I think it's worth reading the book. If not, it can get quite repetitive at times. And you have to keep in mind that she doesn't give first hand information as the book is unauthorised.

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

Thank you for the quick reply!
I have been a fan of Benedict's acting for a little while, and hesitant so far as to wether I should buy the book or not.
But if is respectfully written and really concentrates on his performances, I would say a bit of redundance on his behalf can't do much harm (I think I will get it too, then)

Re: A book on Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch. In Transition)

I am not a "new fan", either, and currently reading it. Quite interesting as there are still things for me to find I didn't know. And I like it very much that she concentrates on his stage and film performances and not on his private life.
At the moment I'm reading it a bit like a lexicon - hopping from one movie or play to the other just like I feel that day.
