Didn't we know this?! They wanted him at all costs, so they've waited with the shooting until Sherlock was finished.

I knew this, it's amazing, isn't it? I'm a big fan of Peter Jackson, not just because of this decision but I admire him for this. Who else would have done it? But in the end it was the right decision as we all know. ;D
