I have problems, too, but over the years I became very good in ignoring the stuff I don't understand and nevertheless enjoying it. When I was watching "The Hollow Crown" just recently I had similar problems... okay, I know the plays, so that's an advantage, but it was pretty good to be able to just ignore the stuff I didn't understand. Otherwise I would have gone mad... and as long as I understand what the movie is about...

I am watching The Hollow Crown with English subtitles AND I know the plays which makes it easier. But there are quite a lot of films with Benedict that have no subitles. Which is a shame.

I have to say that I don't really like to watch movies with subtitles, it's just too distracting (for me). But having the option to watch a movie with subtitles is definitely very valuable, I sometimes watch individual scenes with subtitles after having watched the whole movie without.

The problem with "Wreckers" for me is that the plot is quite complex and often you do not really know what is going on. This in connection with constantly straining my ears dampens my fun a bit tbh.

Oh, I understand completely. When I watched it for the first time, there were several scenes I didn't get at all, so I immediately watched them again. It's definitely more enjoyable when you don't have to do that and can just watch the whole movie from beginning to end.

Was the same with me. Think, I've to watch it several times to really understand what's going on.

I had to seriously concentrate on Wreckers and English is my native language!

Those of you who have to watched dubbed movies, isn't it frustrating not getting to hear Ben's voice?

First time I heard Ben's voice was in October when I watched The fifth estate in London. That infected me. And since then I try to watch everything of his works in the original version.

Very frustrating. Therefore I try to get the DVDs asap. Or find a cinema that shows a film in the original version. But this happens not very often. I was lucky to watch STID in the English version and "The Fifth Estate" when staying Dublin.

Hey, English is my native tongue, and sometimes I have wicked problems with the accent(s). Sometimes, it's not just the accent, but the way in which the dialogue was recorded-- very muffled/soft/mumbly.

You folks who speak English so well are so much luckier than everyone else in the non-English-speaking crowd. As tonaree said, you get to actually hear his voice! I suppose people who don't speak English are used to watching dubbed versions of the American and Brit movies they want to see, but I can't believe it's the same experience.

OTOH, some of us half-deaf English-speakers are sometimes as much in the dark about the dialogue as those who don't speak English at all, or marginally! It can be a real challenge to make out what they're all saying. Subtitles are *wondreful*--- turn them on, turn them off, whatever you want to do, but the option really *should* be there, for all the hearing-impaired and ESL or non-English-speaking people of the world.

I have good hearing and I still prefer to watch with subtitles, to be honest. There's always things that you miss without them and I want to know everything that's being said

Good to hear this from the native speakers. Watching German films I sometimes have the same problem. Other sounds or the music tend to drown the dialogue.

tonnaree, it's absolutely and totally frustrating to watch a movie and not hear Ben's voice. I find that they did a pretty good job in terms of dubbing with Sherlock, but (and that's the most frustrating thing) since Benedict isn't one of the big movie stars yet, he tends to have different 'voices' in different movies. In Sherlock he has a different voice than in STID and The Fifth Estate... that's just crap. Actors like Clooney, Pitt or DeNiro tend to always have the same voice, but as long as you're not that famous in Germany... Well, don't get me started on the dubbing subject, it's just something that I totally object to.
