They always planned to have NT Live screenings of Frankenstein. Both Benedict and Jonny Lee Miller (since they alternated which parts they played) did the 'birth' scene naked. I don't think it would have made any difference to either actor as to whether this was on stage or screen. The nudity is part of the part being played. Whilst some actors may have reservations about performing without clothes on, many are also quite relaxed about doing so.

There's a beautiful Youtube video of part of Benedict's work onstage as his Creature learns to walk.  They did film it and show it in limited engagements in theaters.  They wore loincloth things, and they used both actors intercut in each part.  It's huge tragedy to me that I never got to see it.

No one is discussing Mr. Cumberbatch's personal life.  These are professional choices and actions within the scope of his work.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Sorry, really don't want to bang on about this.
But for clarification.
The NT live screenings were done CLOTHED, because both Benedict and Jonny refused to have themselves screened naked.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Here I am and instead of many Ben pictures I find a discussion about Ben being naked on stage. Perfect!

Thank you so much for that picture, Lily, it's just lovely.

I guess this a little late after he did Frankenstein ;) which was recently. I think actors have eccentricity and if for him it is being naked. Why not?

A legit role on stage is not showing your bits in public, not in that way, you know, like at a drunken party or showing off for the press, etc. The Harry Potter guy, I forget his name, Daniel Radcliffe? did Equus on stage and showed his bits, too. That's legit. Considered artistic, I guess.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

And that play is so spell binding.  I never even noticed the actor do it at our(local) showing..I suddenly thought, er, when did he get naked?! Totallly appropriate to the play...
As is the Frankenstein scene and remember they only did it because the actress did it 1st.

The point is simply he is not bothered by being naked in his work,

I am not bothered by anything he does on stage or in a movie, since that's his career, and if the role calls for it, then he should go for it. But when some photographer spur of the moment suggests he "strip off", as the Brits call it, so she can take some previously-unplanned-for shots, I think that's potentially dangerous. Who knows who had a cell phone on them at the time?

Unfortunately, now that he's Big Stuff, IMO he needs to start thinking that way, be less trusting-- all actors need to, not just Ben. This is not a comment on his personal life, just about the way of the world, as I see it-- there are creepy people *everywhere* who wouldn't think twice about using the camera on their cell phone to take unauthorized images and spread them all over the place, for money, if possible.

See, in the US, getting naked outside of a role, where the public can see, is a no-no. People will think you're on drugs or drunk or nuts or all 3 at once. Seriously. I don't know what will fly in other countries, but here, nope. Actors can do whatever on stage or in front of a movie camera, pretty much (although full frontal nudity for males or females is rare outside the porn industry), but not on their own time, not where the public's going to see them-being-them, outside a role.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

I think the bar looked empty and it was an official shoot.
We're completely OT here, but for what it's worth:
The nudity think doen't bother me half as much as the smoking thing.
Incidentally. Benedict is a smart cookie and hopefully won't let anybody take him  for a ride,..but I do think his employers have  a duty of Health&Safety to him,.
