Re: Chit-chat

My parents just took my oldest child down to their house for the next month (they live 500 miles away), so I'm just down to my youngest chid, who is asleep, and my husband.  Going from 2 children to 1 is almost like have no kids at all now, lol.

Re: Chit-chat

Sounds like fun  I have several friends who majored in that, as well.  I have always loved languages, though, and Japanese fascinated me- so I majored in it.

Re: Chit-chat

I studied it for 6 years and even lived there for a while, and I'm not fluent, either, lol.  The language is very ingrained with the culture, so it can be pretty tough to learn for Westerners.  But it's a very fun language to learn- you have to think completely differently from what you do in English.

That's awesome about your dad.  The last time my mom spent a week at my house, she and I watched it together.  She liked it, although she had trouble following the dialogue occasionally because she's not used to people with non-American accents. My friends are Australian and my former boss was British (from London), so I'm used to it XD

That's what the ESL subtitles are for!  And on the Sherlock DVDs, they're accurate and don't leave out whole sentences, like what happens in some annoying DVDs.  I'm an American too and had a hellish time with their rapid-fire Britspeak and loads of Brit expressions. Once I got the DVDs and put on the subtitles, aaaahhhhhh, finally I got it all!

I guess I'm so used to it I don't even notice it anymore.  Sometimes I even forget I'm listening to a different accent, lol.

Re: Chit-chat

I can get almost all the dialogue - but I keep closed captioning on because of a slight deafness which garbles dialogue if there is background noise.  I also annoy my children when they're with me by the volume I need to hear it at all.

As far as I'm concerned, I can't tell that Jim is using different accents - other than the bad american.
