Your Eurovision party sounds like fun. That sounds like it would be a challenge to find foods from so many of the countries (there's a European grocery store in my area but it definitely stocks certain types of products more than those of other origins), but it sounds like you were able to find a few different things.
I thought of you when I was watching the points come in and seeing Germany get so few. I was hoping they'd do better, though they have done better than the previous two German entries in terms of points.
I didn't know that about the Georgian singer. I think it's cool to hear about some of the performers also being involved in other things besides music.
It's funny, when they were adding the televote points to each country's score, I felt that most of them were pretty low. Even though Ukraine ended up with way more televote points last year than Sweden did this year, I didn't perceive it as lopsided as it seemed to be this year, maybe because Finland took so many and they were near the end?
I was looking at the voting breakdown on Wikipedia to see how my region, "the Rest of the World" voted. In the final, I ended up casting 10 votes - 9 for Belgium and 1 for France. The French singer is from Montreal and I thought she was pretty good, but I was concerned about distributing my votes too thinly and not helping anyone win. Watching the final performance for Belgium, I got the sense from their staging that they wouldn't make it, but their song was the one that stayed in my head the most so I still voted mostly for them. The Rest of the World ended up giving France 1 point and Belgium no points! While it would be too much work, I'm kind of curious how the different countries' people voted, and how many. I wonder how many votes for France were from Canada.
To be perfectly honest, I know a lot of people like Loreen, but I wasn't a fan of her song so I was a little disappointed with the results. Finland was kind of unique and had creative costumes so I wo

I've listened to many of the performances. But before I comment, I just want to say I think this year's postcards are my favourite I've seen since I started watching Eurovision. I had hoped they would use Ukrainian locations (though I wonder how they filmed them, considering ongoing war), and I liked how they group a Ukrainian place with a UK place and a place from the performer’s country. It gives a sense of connection between countries, and I like the way they filmed them.
Anyway, I haven't watched all the performances yet, but of what I saw I'm not really thrilled about a lot of the choices made by the voters. I'm happy for Moldova, because I like the traditional aspect to it since the song references folklore. I enjoyed Norway, I wasn't surprised Norway and Sweden got through. I find Finland kind of annoying.
Azerbaijan wasn't really on my radar before, but I enjoyed their performance. I also enjoyed Netherlands (sidenote: I think Mia's hair is cool) and Malta. I would have voted for them, but I doubt my few votes would've moved the dial much since I probably wouldn't have paid for the full allotment of 20 votes. But you never know. Even if I don't manage to vote Thursday, I'll probably vote in the final.

I can imagine they wouldn't all be Beatles, since they're not the only group from Liverpool that's famous. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more than one song of theirs, though. I'm looking forward to hearing what Go_A does as well.

That's cool to hear your favourite act of the year sing your second favourite song! Lucky you!
Are they playing at the same Cavern Club where the Beatles used to play? It's Liverpool, so I assume it probably is.
I saw recently that they announced some interval acts for the Grand Final who are former Eurovision acts who will be covering famous songs from artists who are from Liverpool. Kalush Orchestra and Daði Freyr are among those acts, so I'm looking forward to that.

I would like to share something kind of amusing (perhaps) that happened on tonight's episode of the quiz show, Jeopardy!. There was a clue asking for the names of the leads playing Sherlock and Watson on Sherlock. The first person to ring it guessed Benedict Cumberbatch and Jude Law. When they got deemed incorrect, another contestant rang in with the correct response. At first I thought mistaking Martin Freeman for Jude Law was odd, but then later on I remembered that Jude Law is in the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes films. So he just got them mixed up, or conflated in his mind somehow. It reminded me I haven't actually watched any of them.

That's nice to know that they have been able to continue on after that rough period.

Glad your cast is getting better. My cat was sick at the end of her life and that was tough to deal with. And even the times when she was sick and still had some life left to live, it was stressful.
I hadn't listened to Blood & Glitter until you mentioned it here, except for I guess a small excerpt. It's not really my type of music, but it was growing on me as I listened and I agree with you about the lyrics. More original than the generic, perhaps cliché, phrase "We are one."
Speaking of Cornelia last year, her song was definitely one I listened to many times after the contest and that has stayed with me, even though in the run-up to the contest it wasn't a favourite of mine.

I like this year's Switzerland more than last year's as well, though I think both had messages I support. I've noticed a couple of songs with anti-war themes this year, which I guess is appropriate given the current situation.
I've added Moldova to my tentative top, though I still only have four. I have been making my way through the songs very slowly this year and have been getting back into some other interests of mine that have been taking up my free time. But I still have been enjoying some Eurovision stuff.

I hadn't been paying attention to the songwriters. That's amazing how many songs some of them have written! I really loved Poland's song last year, but I haven't actually checked out Switzerland this year (I mean, it was in the "all 37 songs video" but I don't remember what that one sounded like). Interesting that the songwriter for Ireland is Scandinavian and hast written for all those famous people. I remember it coming up in interviews in 2021 that Tix had been involved with writing a US artist's hit song. You don't always realize how people get around, writing for others, since it happens behind the scenes and unless you're in the know, you don't necessarily know who writes a song, you just associate it with the performer.
Thanks for the congratulations on the job. It's related to what I studied in university as well as my interests and things I like to do generally, so I'm really happy with what I'm doing. And it's work from home, so I don't have to commute, which I also like.

Thanks for making a thread for this Liberty. Sorry for being AWOL for a while.
I've listened to some of the songs as they've come out, but not many. I listened to the video with the snippets for all 37 songs today. Because I can vote this year I decided to download the official app, and there's a little tool in there that lets you rank your top 10 of all the participants.
I think it's cool that Loreen is back, but I don't particularly like the song. Overall I haven't been that impressed with a lot of what I've heard this year (ironic since I actually get to vote!). Maybe when I hear them in competition with full live performances, more of them will stand out, but right now I just have three that I can actually say for sure I like.
It might not be the most lyrically complex, but I like "Because of You" from Belgium. It's very uplifting and I could dance to it. I also like "Power" from Iceland and "Dance" from Malta (I like the saxophone). Those ones have the melodies that stand out to me most.
I've kind of gone back and forth on Norway, I kind of like it but I don't know yet if it's one of my favourites.
I agree, Croatia is very Eurovision-y in presentation. I've only tried listening to it once so far and couldn't get through it, though. I'm not sure it's for me. But I'm curious to see what their live performance will be like. I'm sure it'll be colourful!
I have a new job now and I will be working when the semifinals are on, so I might have to catch up on those afterwards leading into the final. Or have the broadcast on in the background when certain tasks permit.

Yes, from what I've read, they both are pointing out pretentions of rich people and how people talk about things they think are sophisticated.

I have watched some of those films recently as well! I enjoyed The Banshees of Inisherin a lot more than I thought I would. I don't know why I felt that way, I think I'd read somewhere that there was violence and I was expecting the violence to be worse than it was
I thought on the one hand it was a touching and funny exploration of friendship and mortality. On the other hand, the absurdity of the friends' conflict was an interesting comment on the conflict happening in Ireland at the time that the character occasionally comment on and observe. I think it was, at least in part, a comment on how it's absurd for friends to escalate into a violent conflict with each other over differences that don't warrant them. And the self-destructiveness of that.(it still had my mum dreaming about severed fingers that night, though, unfortunately).
I would like to see Everything Everywhere, All at Once at some point, since I've pretty much only heard positive things about it. I haven't seen Michelle Yeoh in more than a couple of movies, but I like her.I don't want my mum dreaming about severed fingers again. I read an article describing some of the violence, even if it was essentially a spoiler to try to guage whether we should watch it. She has trouble getting disturbing images out of her head once she sees them, especially when watching something right before bed.

I was not aware of that, though I knew that one of Lisa Marie's sons had committed suicide, I think. So much sadness for one family, although I suppose there are others with similar stories who aren't famous.

My mum came across this video earlier this week and we watched it together and laughed a lot. I hadn't realized there were videos of so many of the letters from the Letters Live shows. This one was also interesting to us because it's related to the Ambassor Hotel in Victoria, BC, in Canada. Benedict's Canadian accent is pretty good.

My mum suspects it probably was genetic. Elvis died in his 40s of arrythmia, I believe, plus his body took abuse from drugs and such over the years so he was in his 40s. I believe Lisa Marie died of a heart attack as well. Elvis' mum also died of heart failure, I believe. Obviously, I don't know about any conditions they had or any diagnoses, but because of that pattern my mum thinks it's likely genetic.
This must be so hard for Priscilla. She and Elvis and a bit of a problematic relationship in some ways, but it's also clear that she loved him a lot, and it would have been tough to lose him so young, and now to lose her daughter... I can only imagine.

My OneDrive account showed me a picture I uploaded on this day seven years ago. It was a drawing I forgot I had made, of John's hand reaching for Sherlock's in that handcuff scene. I think I was drawn to it as a way to practice drawing hands, which I've always found challenging. I had forgotten I'd drawn it, but one thing that I noticed when seeing it again today, was that the chain doesn't look very strong, I was clearly more focused on drawing the hands!

Yes, I think it's kind of limited in its view in that way. I think everything will represent the writers in some way, because it's coming from their minds, but not in the way TJLC says it. And I think when a show or film has an ensemble cast, even if Sherlock isn't as much of an ensemble as some other shows, it's reduction to see their stories only serving that of two other characters instead of some broader theme.
I remember finding the conviction that some people had about being certain of their predictions quite interesting, even if I don't agree with it.

Even published analysis of films by certain writers and academics can occasionally be a bit wild or audacious (I encountered something like that during my grad school research, not a conspiracy like Johnlock, but just an interpretation of a film character that was perhaps reaching a bit but was still an interesting idea), so I think there's validity even if you don't agree at all, insofar as it's interesting to see how people can interpret things differently from how you ever imagined.

Glad you found something worth reading! I think I saw your previous reply before you deleted it, but I understand not wanting to be too off-topic. I might check out those videos you mentioned just to see what they are like. It can be fun to revisit things in a new perspective, or see others revisit things.
