I'll give it a shot being I can just DVR it and watch at my leisure, but I know it won't come close to Sherlock.

Is it because many Americans struggle to understand other accents?

It's funny, even within America accents vary from state to state, region to region. I have more trouble understanding southerners than I do English accents.

I will admit that sometimes I did use subtitles when watching The Office on dvd. Some of the dialogue was spoken very quietly and I did have some difficulty from time to time.

Glad you didn't take it personally Brandoman, as I said it's the way most see American showbiz, not people.

I was a little worried after posting that it may offend some people.
Whether Miller will be brilliant playing Holmes, who knows really. My personal views on the actress playing Watson is ... blechhh.

Not to worry, I talk about how most American tv is crap. It has to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to get the ratings to stay on air. Thus we have Jersey Shore, an absolute disgrace and abomination of television.

Likewise, I enjoy the Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies, but they aren't really true to the tone of the original canon. They are Americanized so that simpletons can enjoy it (more action, explosions, less complicated plots, etc.).

As an American I can say that there really is no way Elementary can come close to being as good as Sherlock.

Right off the bat, the idea that Sherlock moves to NYC to solve crimes, come on!!!!???

I agree with the quantity vs. quality argument as well.

I look at some great English shows I love (Luther, Sherlock, and The Office) and they are made 3-6 episodes at a time. Here in America our seasons (series) are generally 22 episodes (In a few seasons, The Office has gone up to 24 or so).

I'd assume that Elementary will just be another fairly standard procedural just using the names Holmes and Watson and hoping to capitalize on the current popularity of the Holmes movies and BBC's Sherlock.

Big fan of this show. Been watching from the start.

As far as ripping off another show, all I can say is you watch enough of these types of shows and everyone borrows from everyone. I've seen Murdoch Mysteries borrow an episode from Columbo.

The Mentalist used the ball under the arm trick.

In a late 90's episode Columbo makes a remark about there not being dust where there should be. IIRC Sherlock made mention about dust or lack therof as a clue of where Moriarty might have been in 221B.

It is hard to have tons of original ideas nowadays haha.

I know he probably won't say but I would be interested to know if someone has mentioned that "one vital clue."

I assume someone has since he almost admits that some people seem to have mentioned some of what actually happened.

I'd assume it's grown quite a following of late.

This song was used in the Pierce Brosnan version of The Thomas Crown Affair. I used to love it back then and listened to it over and over. For those that have seen it, the song was used towards the end of the movie when Thomas Crown returns to the museum. Great scene and great song.

Wherever the writers wrote him? lol

Honestly, opinion would be some place he knew to be safe, a place to give him some time to plot his next move or wait to see what Moriarity's next move would be.

John's a grown man, he doesn't need to be fooled into thinking anyone is 'the bad guy'.
Also Sherlock would see that as a waste of time and valuable mind power to bother with that. What possible reason would there be to make Mycroft look like the bad guy anway??

I was thinking that perhaps Sherlock told Mycroft to feed Moriarity information, knowing he could use it against him later on. I could be way off, just a thought.

It's not so much to fool John into thinking he is a bad guy, what I was trying to say is that it made it seem as if Mycroft was the person responsible for the whole situation.

I was also thinking when he apologizes to John, maybe he was apologizing for the pain he knows he and Sherlock are about to put him through.

Just opinions.

I guess a better way of wording it would have been to say that it made Mycroft look as if he was the one at fault, not the bad guy per se

Not NOW, but maybe… laterz?

If Mycroft is in on Sherlock's plan, which I think he is. Then it is possible that part of the plan was to make Mycroft almost seem like the bad guy in John's eyes.

Don't count on Moftiss following everything in the canon to the letter! At some stage, they're going to get us on that one.
In this case, while I believe they will stick to it, there is always a chance they will not.
"Why?" you may ask.
Because this series is about a younger Sherlock. He is brasher and more unpredictable at times than the older version. Moftiss are showing us a developing genius here, Sherlock still has some polishing to do to himself before becoming the type of man in the canon.
As a younger version, he may decide he can do this on his own, without Big Brother's help. And he probably could to a point, but eventually he will need Mycroft's help. I've always believed Mycroft helped him, but there is still a possibility that brash young Sherlock will try one ego trip too many.

See? We may think we have solved things, but we should never close our minds off to other possibilities. That is when we stop observing and start merely looking.

Anything is possible, but even our young Sherlock has shown he is willing to ask for help when he absolutely needs it. It is farily if not 100% certain that he asked for Molly's assistance. He has asked for help before, and from Mycroft of all people.

I really don't think he has any hopes of him being alive. That line 'don't ... be dead' was just desperation, slight tragic humour as he knows nothing else to say. One last joke with his friend.
It's over as far as John is concerned. His life's empty again.

I agree with most of your posts but on this topic I disagree.

I truly think John thinks of Sherlock as almost super-human, or capable of things no other person is capable of. It might be desperation but I do think that deep deep down he is hoping against hope that somehow a miracle will occur and he'll have his friend back.

I think that's kind of the whole point - all the people helping out were probably set up by Sherlock, from his homeless network, or enlisted by Molly to help, so they just got straight out the way once the job was done. Probably if John looked back at that he'd remember there was something odd about the whole thing that didn't quite make sense...maybe that's why he asks for "one more miracle" because in someways he can't quite believe that Sherlock is dead. He's already seen how Irene Adler can come back from the dead so why not Sherlock...but then he doesn't want to believe that in case it turns out just to be wishful thinking.

I do love that John has complete and utter faith in Sherlock...so much so that he still holds out hope he's alive. Funny thing is, if it was anyone but Sherlock we'd all think he is crazy.

Well no it doesn't, I assumed there were chalk marks, but they turned out to be brickwork in the pavement, lol. Handy!

That picture blows most people's theories out of the water. Everyone has been operating under the impression that those bricks are a chalked out area. This picture ruins all that.

Back to the drawing board it would seem.

The scene is really disorientating for the viewer too. Lots of unstable, blurred camera work. Felt quite woozy myself during the scene, especially after the shock of Sherlock jumping from the roof. Really well done. It feels real.

They really did a great job of helping us understand what John was going through. Obviously from the start of the episode we understand his pain and sadness but this scene really hammers it home for the viewer.

I did find the whole scene odd...A man falls to his death, they pick up the body and leave John standing all alone. No police are shown roping off the area, nobody stays around chit-chatting about having just seen a man fall to his death. Not sure if there is any substance behind it or just wasn't important for the story to stage and shoot all those goings on.

For my taste it is too often emphasized that Sherlock and Mycroft aren’t getting on well.

Mycroft knows Sherlock’s alive.

And -  it’s canon!

The 2 points I wanted to touch on.

They bicker, they argue, they have their differences as brothers often do. When push comes to shove they have eachother's backs. They would probably never become friends or acquaintances had they not been brothers, but they are family and they do need and use eachother from time to time. In the Hound episode, Sherlock uses Mycroft's pass and then Mycroft pulls strings and gets Sherlock and John access to the facility anyway.

The other point, following canon, Mycroft was the one who knew Sherlock was alive and helped him make the necessary arrangements to help him fake his death and go on with his new life. So it would make perfect sense in this series' canon for him to be involved.

I cheated. I just couldn't wait until May to watch.

But in my defense I own series 1 on blu- ray and will be purchasing series 2 asap.

(also I give myself credit for knowing to call it series, not season!)
