Falco by Lyndsay Davia

This is a series of novels. Set in 1st Century Rome, the hero Marcus Didius Falco is a public informer (basically like a modern private detective). The historical setting is thoroughly researched, the stories are well-plotted, characters are interesting, believable and well-developed as the series progresses. Although set in Roman times in effect these are very much like modern detective stories. Falco is a likeable, slightly roguish hero.

For anyone who is able to get BBC I-player one of the stories is being serialised at the moment on BBC Radio 4 extra.

Highly recommended!

Don't make people into heroes John. Heroes don't exist and if they did I wouldn't be one of them.
