Re: Johnlock Fic Recs *warning - adult content*

It was a rare quiet day at work; so don't tell my boss, but I spent just about the whole afternoon in Eugenia Watson's blog.  That Mad_Lori sure can write.  She could easily take this story out of the Sherlock universe and re-tweak it as a good book for teens who live in unconventional family situations. Genie Watson was a very likable character - almost wise beyond her years. It was nice that she had some of her own 'coming of age' issues going on in the story.  Mad_Lori is such a competent author she just pulls you along with her.  I did however find myself wanting certain 'mores' - I wanted to know more about the mysterious Nathan.  I wanted to know more about what changed John and Sherlock's relationship during Genie's stay in the hospital.  I wanted to know more about The Letter and what Sherlock wrote. Mad_Lori said she was giving the blog a rest so, who knows, she may go back to it.  In the meantime I've got to get back to "PIALR". I left off just as they were planning to go to the Sussex country home.  Must. Find. Out. What. Happens!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I said "dangerous" and here you are.

You. It's always you. John Watson, you keep me right.

Don't hold your breath. I think she's moved on. She's also supposedly writing a wedding scene for S/J in her PIALR universe. I'm not sure what she's spending her time on at the moment, writing wise, but I do know she's still in love with Sherlock and John, so that's A Good Thing. We might yet see more in both or either of those universes.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR GENIE'S BLOG

I mostly liked Genie's Blog, but I found it too long and repetitive. And then the parts where Sherlock went missing were way too long and belabored; in fact, I thought that whole thing didn't really "fit" with the rest of the story. It would have made a nice separate story, if Lori was anxious to write some A/A about Sherlock going missing and his husband John being beside himself, not knowing what had happened or what would happen-- you know, a story apart from the Genie thing.

I did like how she was such a kid, and as such, was not privy to all the stuff her parents knew about their relationships, what her parents did behind closed doors, etc. She also thought the whole household revolved around her and her needs, which is just like any kid might be.

Her Sherlock and John were so sweet--- so in love. I'm a sap when there's a wedding, rings, snogging, hand-holding, any of that. Seen through the eyes of their daughter, they were both heroes.... heroes in love.

Probably my fave scene in the whole thing was after Genie told her parents she wanted to take the Holmes name as her middle name and be Sherlock's daughter too, and a few minutes later, she came upon John holding Sherlock, and Sherlock had been weeping, overwhelmed by the honor of it, of having a family like the one John had given him, and now a daughter! So lovely---  Lori can do smooshy reeeeeeal good!

All in all, there was a whole lot more I liked about TBoEW than what I didn't like.

Anyone who loves slash and loves Lori's work should go right to amazon this minute and order themselves up a copy of her published book Zero At the Bone, author name Jane Seville. It's a page-turner, hot as a firecracker, and honestly, the girl writes action scenes like she should be a Hollywood script writer. And the slash is delish. Mmmm. It's 18 bucks because it was printed by Dreamspinner Press, a small company that specializes in homoerotic fiction-- small audience, big price. Worth every cent, IMO. And only 6 bucks and change if you have a Kindle.

Re: Johnlock Fic Recs *warning - adult content*

Hi peeps, just stepping in here for a sec to ask something.. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm really into the Johnlock relationship, but I am not really a slasher. I'm looking for recommendations for a very specific type of fic, but the number one specification is that it is based on deep friendship/bromance, or pre-slash at a stretch.

Before I bother listing all the other stuff I'm looking for in a fic, am I barking up the wrong tree asking for fic recs in here?

OK, you're after friendship stories, not slash. The best source I've found is Archive of Our Own-- go there, to the TV Sherlock section, and just start looking through the latest postings.

Friendship stories are apt to be action/adventure-- sort of like watching an episode, but maybe the guys will be a bit more talky about their personal relationship than they've gone so far on the actual show. A lot of the gen stories are very apt to have them involved with women.

If you want true noromos (meaning no romance of any kind, slash or ship) then checking the authors' listings of pairings at the beginning of each story will give you a clue-- if no pairing is mentioned, then it's probably a gen fic.

If something says Sherlock/OFC or John/OFC (that means original female character) or John/Molly, etc, then you know you'll be wading into M/F ship. Not my scene, but others might eat it up.

The stories we're reccing here are full-blown M/M romance stories. Their authors would have labeled their story pairing as Sherlock/John, although there might be other pairings in the same story, in which case those would be listed as well.

Thanks so much! Yes, that's the kind of thing I'm after. I definitely want noromo fics, but for J/S to be significantly more into each other than we see on the show.

Not mine either. I don't mind the occasional UST or "getting together" fic for potential M/F pairings that I'm really into (there are none in Sherlock), but not generally.

The stories we're reccing here are full-blown M/M romance stories. Their authors would have labeled their story pairing as Sherlock/John, although there might be other pairings in the same story, in which case those would be listed as well.

No problem. I do read slash occasionally but I don't really get into it. I think the main reason is that it so very rarely happens in canon in any fandom that I just feel a bit deflated knowing I'll never get to see it. Does that make sense?

Anyway, thank you so much for your suggestion, I will go and check it out. And I shall leave you to you Johnlock slashy goodness.

Ah. It's *because* we will never see it in canon that we're driven to read and write our favorite pairing; most of us, in fact, would prefer NOT to see Sherlock and John in a relationship in canon, ever. Fortunately, there are 1000s of Sherlock stories out there, of all persuasions, so you should be able to find what you're looking for. Good luck!

Re: Johnlock Fic Recs *warning - adult content*

Oh, I can totally understand that, but unfortunately for me, my fangirl brain is not wired that way. I only usually truly enjoy fanfic if I can at least somewhat imagine it happening in canon. I'll tell you what, it is such a curse!

Re: Johnlock Fic Recs *warning - adult content*

This one's pretty good and not too long. I enjoyed Sherlock's voice. Lots of crime scene drama, which was interesting. No sex, for those who want no sex. Just a couple of kisses. Rated Mature because of the crime stuff, not the sex, of which there wasn't any. But Sherlock is absolutely soul deep in love with his John in this, and that always does it up right for me, whether or not an author lets me be a voyeur while they express that love physically, shall we say.

The Prize, by Trisabells
This one is short novel length, mature rated. An AU, set in a post-apocalyptic era, after The Event, in which most people died. Survival is the name of the game, and Sherlock and Mycroft are good at it. Sherlock finds Dr. John Watson while reconnoitering in London one day, and the rest is history. I liked this one a lot-- I like post-apocalyptic stories, and I don't mind a good AU. The author writes Sherlock's voice and described his hand to hand fighting style as well as some A/A chase scenes really well.

Senza Catene
Another one by the fantastic madlori. This one is short, rated G, no sex (only a couple kisses and some promises of stuff to come that we never get to see). Sherlock is Sherlock, John is John, technically this is not an AU, except that it is. Sherlock sings opera. Yes, opera. Don't miss this one.

As you read, make sure to listen to the music (she supplies pointers to 3 of the pieces), remember that Sherlock is the deep baritone voice part you hear. The music brought tears to my eyes. Enjoy.

Re: Johnlock Fic Recs *warning - adult content*

OK, another long one, this one in Sherlock's POV, which I'm finding is unusual. The author deliberately uses a stream of consciousness kind of style to get inside his head, which is interesting. In this one, John marries Mary Moran (is that her last name, the gal from original canon?), even though he's in love with Sherlock and Sherlock with him. There is some (quite a bit of) partner betrayal, so a warning there if it matters to anyone. There's quite a bit of Mycroft in this one-- observe how much Sherlock loathes him, but how much Mycroft loves Sherlock, even though he cannot seem to stop meddling in Sherlock's life.

Okay, so I downloaded Zero At The Bone by Jane Seville (mad_lori) from Amazon. WOW (fans self) talk about HOT!!! I really enjoyed it, but be warned, there is a lot of manlove there, so don't read it if that's not you cup of tea! It is part of the Gay For You genre, which, as I have found out, means men who thought they were straight until they meet the other man in the story (my life has been so sheltered LOL). The plot, yes, there is actually a plot, would be cliched if it was a man/woman story but having two male protagonists makes it different. There are a couple of free short stories with the two guys on her website, and she says she will write another book with the guys. I certainly hope so.

Oh, glad you liked! Yes, the book is explicit, for sure, which IS up my alley, so I was in heaven. Not porny-- I don't care for porn, no matter what genders are involved-- but the physical expression of love, love, love. Just my cuppa. As you probably know, that story was first a fan fic in the Brokeback Mountain fandom, but she changed the guys' names and occupations and published it, yay!

Of course there's a plot; why wouldn't a M/M romance story not have a plot? If a story is labeled as PWP (Plot, What Plot?), then you can expect porn, but otherwise, there's almost always a good story there.

She will never write that sequel, IMO, so we need to be content with what we have. I usually never say never, but in this case, I'm pretty sure, since her track record for writing promised sequels (or finishing things she posted half-done) is poor. But as long as she keeps writing new wonderful stuff, I don't care. *g*  Have you read the S/J Performance In A Leading Role yet? Wonderful.

This might be one of the best slash novels I've ever read. I love, love, love angst, and this one had plenty. I actually burst into tears at one point reading this today. *happy sigh*  It has the happiest of happy endings, though, so have no fear.

This one is explicit, definitely. Written in alternating Sherlock and John POVs, which is interesting.

Sorry, I can't find the recommendation for "Inter Office Gossip". Just wanted to say I loved it, it's hilarious - and endearing.

There are several other fics on her LJ that aren't in the masterpost.

Yes, I did read the epilogue, and she has three Xmas scenarios afterwards, too. All well done, in the same universe.
