I can't think of a motive for a new villain either, Moran or otherwise, don't they all prefer to be a bit more subtle? Why would anyone do this?

I suppose it would have to be someone who wants to play - with Sherlock. Someone who knows that they would bring Sherlock in when Moriarty is concerned. Who that might be? No idea.

Btw, I had a crazy idea just now, and it probably leads us nowhere, but: Mary? Could it be Mary who made this happen? After all, she was working for the CIA, she might still have some contacts or she might even be able herself to pull off something like that. But what would her motive be?

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

Rescuing Sherlock? I considered Mary, too. Of the people who like Sherlock enough to do such a thing, the only ones who can imagine pulling it off is Mycroft, Irene and Mary. Well, perhaps Sherlock's mother, she might have hidden abilities.

Mary? That's brilliant.

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

Miss Me?..
I think it is just a ploy to rescue Sherlock from his exile/suicide mission.
Someone alive from the past that owes Sherlock a favour, I think Irene..and who told her...why Mycroft.
I think his.... i hope you learned your lesson moment looked a bit too  umm something...

Alternatively professor james moriarty , mathematician...named on the book written by Sherlocks mummy.
As Sherlock chases him..we see lots of Andrew playing him via the new improoved mind palace scenes...but totally diff guy in the end, cos the rooftop Moriarty guy is dead.

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

In the Empire interview the Moftiss were (of course) really mysterious about this but they did say that Andrew is one of the few people who knows about this storyline. So maybe he will play 'someone' in the next series.

(The interview is linked somewhere in the HLV category)

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

He has to know...after all, even if he is not needed, they would have to inform him. Though I wouldn't be surprised it they added some flashback scenes with him. Or add him as some sort of imaginary figure for the new baddy.

Anthea orchestrated the entire thing from her all powerful Blackberry so that her boss, Mycroft, could get his brother safely back. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png

What about the involvement of someone from the Diogenes Club?

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

I have another theory (which I like less than my Moran one, but here it goes): John Clay. Perhaps the Waters gang was an early set-up for him. For further explanation, read here: http://swanpride2.wordpress.com/2014/01/23/the-moriarty-twist/

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

If it was Mycroft, Irine or Mary what will happen next? There wont be a new villain, no reason to keep Serlock home. It must be someone who can provide a new plot for the series and a reason to use Sherlock there rather than to send him away.

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

I agree...from a writing perspective a "fast solution" doesn't really make much sense.

Therefore I am currently inclined to hope for the second option:

Colonel Sebastian Moran.

Yes, I know, Moran already turned up in TEH. BUT (and that is something I didn't realize for a long time) his first name was never given. He was only called "Lord Moran". I was a little bit confused that none of the characteristics which "belong" to the character of Sebastian Moran made it into the episode - a card player, a sharp shooter, an adventurer, a part of Moriarty's net aso. But when I was working on my reference list, I realized that there are two Moran's mentioned in "The Empty House" - Colonel Sebastian Moran and his father Sir Moran. So what if the character we saw in TEH is not Sebastian Moran but the interpretation of Sir Moran (who is only mentioned in passing in Canon, pretty much like Moriarty's brother)? This would mean that Sebastian Moran is still out there, and might now want revenge, not necessarily for Moriarty, but because Sherlock is responsible for the arrest of a relative of his (not necessarily his father).

I find it interesting that Sherlock has an old "friend" who was given the name Sebastian.

You would think the writers, being such fans of the fiction, would avoid giving indicidental characters distinctive names used for major characters in the canon.

Unless...

Re: Potential "Fake Moriarties"

If Moriarty is truly dead http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/dead.png
,  my number one suspect is Mycroft . Of course he was helped by someone else , but still. He can't be that white, knowing neither foir Mary neither for this . Come on , he spends his life spying people.
