Re: Inside the Actor's Studio: 10 Questions for our Members to answer

But Pre-school shouldn't be anything like formal learning/teaching. It shouldn't be anything like school. This would be (is) entirely inappropriate for children of that age. This is which my ex- preschool manager's hat on.

That's why preschool teaching is much harder than K-12. There is so MUCH paper work that in all honesty no one's ever going to read = parent's can't really understand some of the jargon; so the only real reason we bother with any of that is so that when the area supervisor comes around to visit, we have something to show for it.

And all of this is AFTER we manage to convince the kids that their parents have not abandoned them & that preschool is fun & they should have a great time, etc... I've been in the toddler room & found it traumatising how much the kids miss their parents. You want to sit with all of them & comfort them but of course you can't get around to everybody (& did I mention that you need TONNES of patience?)

/end rant.

Re: Inside the Actor's Studio: 10 Questions for our Members to answer

I have to say I have genuine concerns about the current policy of bringing more, younger children into pre-school for longer.
We get sick of hearing them crying through the school, too!
I remember before I got this job, I applied to a day nursery.
I was shown the baby room and told it had everything a baby needed.
I had to stop myself from saying: the only thing a baby needs is its mother!

Re: Inside the Actor's Studio: 10 Questions for our Members to answer

I agree besleybean. Also the amount of record keeping and planning that is required for this age group is frankly ridiculous. I am not in favour of small children being in day care for long periods of time or them entering school at the age of 4.

I'm actually happy with the systen as it used to be:
Half day nursery the academic year they are 4.
Full time school the academic year they are 5.
But nursery not compulsory and compulsory school only FROM 5.

Re: Inside the Actor's Studio: 10 Questions for our Members to answer

In all fairness, most mothers would lose their jobs were it not for childcare/preschool. When women demanded gender career equality, they forgot to ask for equal career stability.

If they don't use the childcare system, they will lose their jobs and then they will enter part time employment or cease employment altogether to better look after their kids and then their husbands will look at them differently because they aren't bringing in as much money as before.

The dads can promise nothing will change as much as they like but the reality is that if you lose your job, you lose the financial independence that was the reason you got the job in the first place. Then when you spend money you have to justify it with hubby. I've seen it happen to too many people I know.

It's each to their own.
But hubby amd I made sure we bought property within our means and one which could be funded on hubby's salary.
When my daughter was 18 months old, I had to retuen to part time work, for financial reasons.
But I did opposite shifts to hubby or relied on Gran!
I tend to find that modern/young couples want it all and all at once.
What they consider necessary, I would consider luxury.
I've always earned a pittance.

Re: Inside the Actor's Studio: 10 Questions for our Members to answer

I don't regard Pre-school or school as free babysitting, and i never have. in my experience an awful lot of people do. They don't care what their children are doing or learning at school as long as they are there. The term after a child is five was (indeed is) the legal age for starting school (or education otherwise) in the UK but that, frankly, appears to have been cheerfully forgotten and we have children (often boys) who are being labelled as failing readers when they have not even attained the age of 6, for goodness sake!

We appear to have digressed somewhat from the original 10 Questions.

Yes. Saturn has a habit of  doing that; apologies for hijacking of thread again. I will try to make up for it by answering the original questions:

Like Heaven Can Wait.  Nothing wrong with gibberish. When my son was small his favourite exclamation was 'fish sticks'! (Drove us crazy after a few months though!).
