How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

I'm sorry if this sounds a bit ambitious and high strung...

But has the show and Sherlock Holmes himself had an impact on your life? Even if it's in a little way...

For me I feel like becoming obsessed with this show has allowed me to be who I was hiding.

I have always been a smart kid, and that has always made me lonely... my teachers worried about me not wanting to socialize (mainly because I'd rather read than braiding barbie hair and fight over who was better friends with who...)... I learned to read fast and would read a lot of science, history and cryptology books when the others were out playing football and I would come up with and write down hypothesis after hypothesis... My English skills (although hardly perfect) are mostly self taught from Internet use and online chats with a Scotish girl and watching American fims. I always knew everything and ended up showing off a lot. When I was about 8 my favourite thing was studying mummifactions and when I was 17 I wrote a 15 page paper on ancient Egyptian mummies and their significance for the knowledge of life at the time without barely opening a book and got a B+.

I was already bullied for my looks but especially in the older classes I started feeling it wasn't okay to get high grades and always have the right answer. I actually started 'cheating' on tests so my grades would drop... I did everything to seem stupid so I wouldn't get punished. One time I 'forgot' to be stupid on a science test and got a B+. My science teacher who hadn't known me before I started to pretend to be something I wasn't was shocked and showed my test to the entire class who had actually failed the paper. I can still remember what he said... "How on earth is it that she got it right when none of you did??".

I never lost my thirst for knowledge... but some years ago as I got into Doctor Who and found myself quickly understanding the 'physics' of it I started to slowly believe in myself. Last year I took a fast track business class and became top of my class. With my obsession with Sherlock starting January this year I realized I was perfectly alright for the first time... It's okay to be smart, it's something to strive for in fact!

You can be the weirdo/freak and still find a best friend... and have all the fun in the world.
Also, Sherlock teached me to care less about what others think - while also teaching me to care more what others think. I learned listening to my "Johns" and I get better at ignoring my "Donovans".

Oh yes, it really does!

And I like to join you, Schmiezi. Never thought to get to know so many nice people.

I'm constantly broke because of that stupid Sherlock-BBC-Mofftiss-Cumberbatch-Freeman-Doyle-thingything.

*hug*

I'm very sorry to hear about your school experiences. I'm glad you have come to terms with it now you're grown up.

I was rather similar from the outset, you know, a bookworm like you, not a big socialiser, rather plain-looking kid with big glasses - but I was lucky to grow up in an all-bookworm family, with my parents and older brothers constantly reassuring me that it was OK to be brainy rather than sexy, and I was lucky to find a little group of like-minded kids at school. So while I never won any popularity contest at school I wasn't lonely and I also never felt the need to downplay the bookwormy-ness. I'm really sorry to hear that you felt you had to.

But now, looking back at my school years and our little troupe of little Sherlocks, we were terribly arrogant, terribly stuck up - a B+ grade was a failure for us, and everyone in class except us was a complete moron, far below our dignity. We were all walking around in metaphorical Belstaff coats woven of A grades and academic awards.

I'm glad that Sherlock showed me how immature that was really. It helped me survive my school years, but it really didn't make me a nice person.

It's perfectly OK to be brainy and to value that over looks and popularity, but it's not in fact OK to use it to make yourself feel better at other (less brainy) people's expense. It's OK to make your cleverness into a coat of armour for your own protection but it's not OK to make it into a weapon against less brainy but otherwise innocent people.

Only I wasn't aware of that for a long time. When I watch Sherlock now I see much of my younger self in him but I can't help being very, very glad that I got over that sort of arrogance by the time I was about 23 (late enough!).

Strange, isn't it, how the same show and the same character can mean so much to either of us, but in totally different (almost opposed) ways?!

Re: How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

My best friend has always been heavily involved in fandoms -- analysing shows on forums, going to conventions, writing and reading fic, etc. It's something about her that I didn't understand beyond understanding that it's a way for her to relax. My obsession with Sherlock and Benedict has given me a glimpse into that part of her life that doesn't include me. In a way, it's brought us even closer together.

Another thing that I've gained through discussions on this forum is a deeper appreciation for the show and other points of views and interpretations. The show feels richer to me now that I have so many other perspectives of it.

Re: How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

Oh, yes, it has changed my life. If someone had told me three years ago that I would spend hours on a forum instead of working, become a mod, improve my English, and meet so many nice people from near and far who became friends I would have called you mad. But there I am. And the funny thing is that I cannot even remember exactly how I found the board.

Re: How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

I remember turning to my son after the 1st episode finished and saying: that is the best thing I have ever seen,,,cannot wait to next week.
I immediately searched on line for a fan site...took me a couple of months.
Things have never been the same since.
My whole life is divided between: B.S(Before Sherlock) and A.S(After Sherlock).

Re: How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

Sherlock has changed my life in so many ways.. I can honestly say I owe him (and the whole production team) so much.

I was coming from quite a hard place when I started watching the series this year. I haven´t been to Afghanistan , but I still felt like a veteran, having survived a very traumatic birth that nearly resulted in my death and some serious health problem I had to cope with afterwards, sleepless nights and hectic days all alone with two babies/toddlers.. I had no energy left, no interests in anything and was letting things slide big time. And just like John I was totally swept away by Sherlock´s energy and pulled into his world. It was just the spark I needed to get back on my feet and get my sh** together again. Stealing John´s words I can say he completely turned my life around. I lost so much weight, I got in shape again by completely changing my diet and working out (while listening to Sherlock soundtracks ^^), I improved my English in the most pleasant way imaginable (thanks to everyone in this wonderful forum!), took up my other language studies again and slowly started to feel comfortable in my own skin (and mind-bungalow) again. I had a little relapse when S3 had such a different and much more negative energy to it, but still.. the overall positive effect Sherlock had and continues to have on my life are overwhelming. And no-one in real life must ever know that it´s mostly because of some silly TV show..

Zatoichi, that sounds wonderful that this helped through rough times!!
As for the birth you gave and hardly survived: great we got the chance to have you around.

Re: How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

I guess all this is something the creators of the show never dreamed of - people from different continents becoming friends, even visiting each other. Their show helping people through difficult times or change their lives for the better. This is amazing. And I hope they know that this is so much more than just entertainment for many of us.

Re: How Has Sherlock Changed Your lIfe

Ah yes, the language thing ... I certainly am far away from good with my English skills but I never used this language that often like after discovering Sherlock ... because I want to listen to Benedict's voice  ... because the atmosphere in the show is much better in the original version ... because I want to communicate with like-minded people from all over the world in this forum ...

And I also started to watch other films and series in English versions ... and I read more English books now ... and and and ...
