Episode titles in other languages

If you're catching up and haven't seen TRF yet, there might be a bit of a spoiler here... so beware

Danish TV have started a rerun of the episodes every Sunday. This week they reached TRF. The title in Danish actually threw me a bit... but that might just be me.

Translated into English the title is "Sherlock Holmes Death"... well thanks for spoiling the entire thing.

Are there other funny examples of this?

Re: Episode titles in other languages

A list might be nice to have here - good idea!

German Titles so far:

S1
Ein Fall von Pink
Der blinder Banker
Das große Spiel

S2
Ein Skandal in Belgravia
Die Hunde von Baskerville
Der Reichenbachfall

S3
Der leere Sarg
Im Zeichen der Drei
Sein letzter Schwur

Would you like to add the Danish ones? Who has others to offer?

Re: Episode titles in other languages

No problem, I hadn't thought to list the Danish ones as I suppose no one could read them...

S1:
En Studie i Lyserødt (this sentence is grammatically incorrect!)
Den Blinde Bankmand
Farlig Leg

S2
Skandalen i Belgravia
Baskervilles Hunde
Sherlock Holmes Død

S3
Den Tomme Ligvogn
De 3's Tegn
Hans Sidste Løfte

Den Afskyelige Brud

Re: Episode titles in other languages

I can read the Danish ones ;) I can add the Swedish titles as well (which by the way sounds ridicolous!)

S1:
En studie i rosa
Den blinde bankiren
Det stora spelet

S2:
Kvinnan
Baskervilles hund
Det sista problemet

S3:
Den tomma likbilen
De tres tecken
Hans sitsa löfte

Re: Episode titles in other languages

Lazarus, does "Det sista problemet" means "The final problem"?

The Swedish titles don't sound ridiculous at all. They sound ... cute.

Especially "Kvinnan" - "The Woman"

It does

Well I think they take away so much of the episode from the title. Make them sound "less" then they are even though they translate to almost the exact same thing. Hard to explain, haha

Re: Episode titles in other languages

It seems they use the original titles in Norwegian, they don't translate them. Of course, I could translate them myself, but it would look very similar to the Danish and Swedish ones.

Re: Episode titles in other languages

Nice thread. Let´s add some slavic languages!

Slovak titles:

S1
Štúdia v ružovom (I would rather choose „Štúdia v ružovej“)
Slepý bankár
Veľká hra

S2
Škandál v Belgravii
Pes baskervillský („The Hound od Baskervilles“ as ACD´s novel, not „Hounds of Baskerville“)
Reichenbašský pád

S3
Prázdne máry
Znamenie troch
Posledná prísaha (means just „Last Vow“, they lost „his“ somewhere)

Titles in Czech:

S1
Studie v růžové
Slepý bankéř
Velká hra

S2
Skandál v Belgravii
Psisko baskervillské („psisko“ is an emphasis that sounds a bit unnatural here, but they couldn´t help it, since there´s no difference between hound and a dog in our languages)
Reichenbašský pád

S3
Prázdný pohřebák
Znamení tří
Poslední přísaha („his“ is lost here too)

And Polish titles:

S1
Studium v różu
Niewidomy bankier
Wielka gra

S2
Skandal w Belgrawii
Demony Baskerville („Demons of Baskerville“, hmmm...)
Upadek z Reichenbach

S3
Pusty karawan
Znak trzech
Jego ostatnia przysięga

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Re: Episode titles in other languages

It's weird that the translators thought it was necessary to change the title of TRF - after all, it's not an English word, it's a German place name. They don't translate it for English-speakers, or it would be The Richard Brook Fall

One Czech translation indeed mistook Reichenbach for a personal name and translated it accordingly. The picture of the falls shown in the very first seconds of the episode didn´t influence them the least.

Re: Episode titles in other languages

John and Sherlock were positively demonic between the sheets the day they were there.

Re: Episode titles in other languages

Hmm, half a village was scared of their demonic moans and howls so I guess, "demons" is a better name than "angels" in this case.
